LINDY

I guess I hadn't thought about combining the two in this discussion. I stand corrected - a call followed up by an email with a succinct overview and any supporting info is a good way to go.

I disagree. If a subject needs explaining carefully... it's phone call time, because you can judge the level of understanding you are already working with, as well as the changing level of comprehension in the person you're talking to. It's the difference between teaching a class and writing a book on the same subject. The latter takes much, much longer.

You can't judge comprehension levels on email, or immediately answer any sub questions that come up. You either have to cover all the bases of possibilities, or you have to make a selection of assumptions that will always turn out to be wrong.

If it's *that* complicated, follow up a call or a meeting with an email. This will be massively, and I mean ten times massively, quicker, in both the long and short term. The follow-up email will also keep the audit trail in tact, without creating a massive and immediately useless paper trail.

Personally I'm a big fan of email as it's trackable - and re-readable. Phone is good but sometimes it's good to spell things out carefully, especially when the topic involves technical details.

Preach it brother, I'd definitely get more done if someone would be kind enough to gnaw my ears off.. but the telephone is a valuable communications medium.
